Building Smarter: The Materials We Use and Why We Chose Them
Building Smarter: The Materials We Use and Why We Chose Them
Before MDU Homes was established, CEO Jeff Levy spent over 30 successful years in the housing industry. During that time, his daughter, CMO Kennedy Levy, observed and learned along the way. After college, Kennedy began taking on interior decorating projects, including sourcing for and staging the homes. With Jeff's industry market insight and Kennedy's eye for design, it quickly became clear the two would make waves in the industry together. So, the two began to brainstorm.
When the company was still a mere idea with no name, there was one thing that was certain: high-quality materials matter, and everyone should have access to a reliable home. Whether the product is for long-term living or a temporary stay, it should be made to withstand the climate you want to reside in. After months of research and renderings, MDU Homes' first model home, The Modern, was built and crafted from materials we're proud of, and excited to showcase.
Sustainability Built In
MDU Homes aren't just about minimalism—they're about minimizing your environmental impact too. Here's how:
- •Smaller footprint = less material waste during construction and less land disturbance
- •Mini-split HVAC systems use up to 30% less energy than traditional systems
- •LED lighting throughout uses 90% less energy than traditional bulbs
- •R-22 insulation keeps energy consumption low year-round
The Materials We Use & Why
Trex Decking:
Not only is Trex the superior durable choice, it's also low maintenance, weather resistant, and pests, like termites, with xylophagy diets will spare your deck.
2×4 Walls:
A popular choice for residential applications and when it's used with other high quality materials, your structure is sound, reliable, and comfortably insulated.
2-Head Ductless Mini Split:
Personalized comfort is key. Customize the temperature in the Primary Bedroom and Living/Kitchen space–at the same time. Save energy by turning off the heating or cooling while you're not occupying the space.
R-22 Roof Insulation:
Our builds are designed to meet the same thermal performance standards as traditional stick-built homes, with R-values that ensure year-round comfort and energy efficiency.
Thermopane Windows:
IGU glass made of improved insulation properties that will help keep your space the temperature you desire, while also assisting in outside noise cancelling.
Concrete Fiber Walls:
Class A in fire resistance ratings. This material is non-combustable and produces low smoke, but in testing, often boasts a Zero Flame Spread Rating.
The Minimalism Mindset Meets Luxury
MDU Homes balance minimalism and luxury with features that don't compromise:
- •Stone countertops
- •Stainless steel appliances
- •Full-size bathrooms with 60″ showers
- •Nine-foot ceilings
- •Smart storage solutions
Minimalism here is about curation, not sacrifice. Every material is intentionally selected to deliver both beauty and function.
